York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills Book 8--Indentures 10 October 1687 Whereas John Parker als Selwood Servant to John Godding Marriner Late of this County Deced. whoe was to serve the said Godding six yeares, as may appeare by Indenture bearing date the 4th. of October 1686 And now after the said Godding deceased was sould to John Smyth and now the said Parker denyeth that to bee his name that is to the Indenture, although hee Confessed that hee was the same but now Saith his name is Selwood Itt is therfore ordered that the said John Parker als. Selwood doe serve his said Master John Smyth or his Assignes according to the aforesaid Indenture as may appear upon Record. Betweene John Goddin of Greenwich in Kent Marriner of the one part and John Parker late of Hull in Yorkshire of the other part Wittnesseth that the said John Parker in Consideracon that the said John Goddin hath undertaken att his own pper Costs and Charges to Transport him unto his Majties. plantacon of Virginia and to pvide him meat, drink, washing, Lodging, Apparell and all other necessaries Dureing him stay here in England, and alsoe for the said intended voyage, and by the space and terme of six years next after his Arivall into the said plantacon; and att the end of the said term to finde and allow him Decent Apparrell and such other Allowances and Necessaries as by the Custome of the Countrey are in like Cases given and granted, the said John Parker hath volluntarily of his owne free Consent without any deceit or sinister practice being destitute of all necessaries, bound and obliged himselfe and by these prsents doth binde and oblidge himselfe to the said John Goddin to serve him or his Assignes according to the Custome of the said plantacon by the space and term of six yeares to Comence from the time of his Arrivall in the said plantacon, and the said John Parker doth by these prsents, Covenant, promise and Grant to and with the said John Goddin Dureing all the said terme faithfully dilligently and honestly to serve the said John Goddin his Executors or Assignes in all maner of services according to the Custome of the said Country, and shall not at any time hereafter retract or deny this his volluntary Act and Consent, In Wittness whereof The said parties have Interchangeably hereunto sett there hands and seales the day andyeare above written. Dom. 1686 and declared himselfe to bee above the Age of fourteene yeares, and to be single and unmarried, and noe Covenant or Contracted Servant to any pson or persons whatsoever And to have noe parents Liveing, and alsoe his voluntary Consent & desire to serve the above named John Goddin according to the tenor of the Indenture above written, all which is Regestered in the Office for that purpose Appointed by his Majties Gracious Letters, Pattents. Source: York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills (8) 34-35. 5 January 1687/8 This Indenture Wittnesseth that John Fleming son of John Fleming senr of York parish and County Tanner doth with ye. free and voluntary will and Consent of his said father putt and binde himselfe as an Apprentice unto Henry Collings of Hampton parish in the County aforesaid Planter, and wish to serve after the maner of An apprentice, unto the full End and Terme of sixteene whole yeares, which said time will make the said Apprentice to be of the full Age of one and Twenty yeares, In all which said Terme the said Apprentice the said Henry Collings and Ann his Wife well and truly shall serve, his secretts keepe the Lawfull & honest Comandements Every where willingly shall doe, Hurt to his sd. Master or Mrs. hee shall nott doe nor suffer to bee done of others, but that hee to his power shall Lett or forth with give notice to his sd. Master or Mistris of the same, the goods of his said Master hee shall not waste, nor them to any unLawfully Lend, att Cards, Dice or any un Lawfull Game hee shall not play whereby his said Master or Mrs. may incur any Hurt, furnication hee shall not Committ Matrymony hee shall not Contract, Ordnarys hee shall not fre quent, with his owne pp goods or any others During his said Terme without the Lycence of his said Master, Hee shall not absent him selfe from the service of his said Master, neither by day nor Night But in all things as a good and faithfull Apprentice hee shall gently beare and behave himselfe towards his said Mastr. & Mrs. and all his, During all the said terme, And the said Master to his sd. Apprentice doe hereby pmisse to give or Cause to be given him when hee shall Come to the age of seaventeene yeares, One yong Cow with all her Increase from that time, as alsoe to finde unto his said Apprentice sufficient Apparrell and Meat drinke Wash ing and Lodgeing with all other necessarys meete & Convenient for An apprentice During the aforesaid Terme, and att the End & Expiration of the said Terme, to give and allow, or Cause to be given and allowed him, one whole Commendable suite of Apparrell & In Wittnesse whereof the said pties to these prsents Indentures Interchangeably have sett their hands and seales the fifth day of January on the yeare of our Lord God 1687/8. Forrest his Executors. Administrators. and Assignes, from the day of ye. date hereof untill the first and next arrivall at ye. Island of Virginia, and after for and During the Term of fowre yeares to serve in such service and Im ploymt. as the said John Forrest for his Assignes shall there Imploy him according to the Custom of the Country in the Like kinde In Consideracon whereof the said John Forrest doth hereby Covenant and grant to & wth. County and parish aforesaid To bee Imployed in all maner of Lawfull Imploymt. and with them after ye. Maner of an Apprentice, to Dwell and serve from the day of ye. Date of these prsents untill shee shall Attaine to the full age of one and twenty yeares, or the day of her Marriage, which of them shall first bee, or Come, fully to bee Compleated and Ended, By all which Term the said Apprentice Her said Master and Mrs: well and truly shall serve their Comands Honest and Lawfull every where shee shall gladly doe; And the said Robert Managon and Mary his Wife, to their sd. Apprentice shall finde and allow suffici ent Meat Drink and Bedding and all other Necessaryes meete and Convenient for an Apprentice for and Dureing the said Term, And the said Robert Managon and Mary his Wife shall take Care that their said Apprentice bee vertuously brought up, and bestow upon her a Compleat yeares Schooling to bee Educated in Reading ye. vulgar tongue, to bee taught as aforesaid, within the aforesaid term of her Apprenticeship, And further the said Robert Managon and Mary his Wife shall att ye. End and Expiration of ye. aforesaid term finde and allow to their sd.
